“Like an angel, she saved my son's life.”
— Valerie Melango

I look at my son today and feel so blessed to have him in our lives and grateful for his health.

Twenty-four weeks into my pregnancy, I started having contractions. My doctor took every possible measure to reduce the chances for early delivery, including restricting me to bed rest. I was sent to
my story
the hospital seven times before my doctor told me enough was enough. It was time to deliver my child.

A promise to keep my son safe
On June 12, 2009 at 1:19 PM, my son Tyler was born at Mountainside Hospital, but my delivery was not without complications. Tyler was born with the umbilical cord wrapped around his neck, preventing him from breathing. Before my husband or I knew what was happening, Dr. McDonald ran into the room and like an angel, she saved my son’s life. I was discharged from the hospital a few days after giving birth, but I was told Tyler had to stay in the
Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at HackensackUMC Mountainside for at least another week.
I was consumed with concern over my son’s health, but Dr. McDonald reassured me that Tyler was going to be fine and promised to make sure he
was safe and comfortable.

We will forever be grateful
My husband spent every night at the hospital
with Tyler while I recovered. All the doctors and nurses at HackensackUMC Mountainside were amazing.
In a short period of time they became like family. Dr. McDonald and Dr. Andrejko took the time to make sure we understood everything and spoke
to us as the new parents of a beautiful boy, not a sick baby.
We will be forever grateful to the entire staff at HackensackUMC Mountainside.

A healthy, vibrant one-year-old boy
Tyler is now more than a year old and full of energy! He loves to eat, crawls like he has somewhere important to go and is almost standing. Due to my early delivery, Tyler faced a few complications during his first few months, including colic and acid reflux. Now, he is a healthy, vibrant little boy and we owe it all to HackensackUMC Mountainside. Our entire family is thankful for all of the attentive care, support and encouragement the doctors at HackensackUMC Mountainside provided.
