My Story

“Like an angel, she saved my son's life.”

Valerie Melango

I look at my son today and feel so blessed to have him in our lives and grateful for his health.

Twenty-four weeks into my pregnancy, I started having contractions. My doctor took every possible measure to reduce the chances for early delivery including restricting me to bed rest. I was sent to the hospital seven times before my doctor told me enough was enough. It was time to deliver my child.

A promise to keep my son safe

My son Tyler was born at Mountainside Medical Center, but my delivery was not without complications. Tyler was born with the umbilical cord wrapped around his neck, preventing him from breathing. Before my husband or I knew what was happening, the neonatologist ran into the room and, like an angel, she saved my son’s life. I was discharged from the hospital a few days after giving birth, but I was told Tyler had to stay in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Mountainside Medical Center for at least another week. I was consumed with concern over my son’s health, but the doctor assured me that Tyler was going to be fine and promised to make sure he was safe and comfortable.

We will forever be grateful

My husband spent every night at the hospital with Tyler while I recovered. All the doctors and nurses at Mountainside Medical Center were amazing. In a short period of time, they became like family. They took the time to make sure we understood everything and spoke to us as the new parents of a beautiful boy, not a sick baby. We will be forever grateful to the entire staff at Mountainside Medical Center.

A healthy, vibrant boy

Tyler is now a healthy boy full of energy! Due to my early delivery, Tyler faced a few complications during his first few months including colic and acid reflux. Now, he is a healthy, vibrant little boy and we owe it all to Mountainside Medical Center. Our entire family is thankful for all of the attentive care, support and encouragement the doctors at Mountainside Medical Center provided.
