It’s back to school and what a great time for scheduling annual checkups and exams for kids.  You might start to see the paperwork trickle in – forms for sports, proper health documentation, it may seem a bit overwhelming at times!

Staying current with wellness exams for kids is so important to their overall health.  Depending upon their age, it may be required that they see their family physician or pediatrician more than just once every year.  These “well child” visits not only establish a lasting relationship, but it helps to establish a medical history to ensure growth and developmental progress over an extended period of time.  Some additional benefits, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics, include:

  • Prevention. Your child gets scheduled immunizations to prevent illness. You also can ask about nutrition and safety in the home and at school.

  • Raising concerns. Make a list of topics you want to talk about such as development, behavior, sleep, eating or getting along with other family members.

  • Team approach. Regular visits create strong, trustworthy relationships
