Lung Cancer Screening Saves Lives

Each November, we celebrate Lung Cancer Awareness Month. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in the United States, ahead of breast, pancreatic and colon cancers combined.  In The U.S. alone, there are approximately 160,000 deaths each year. By spreading awareness about the disease, and lifestyle factors that can contribute to developing Lung Cancer, our hope is to help prevent further progression on disease.

One of the most important risk factors for developing lung cancer is smoking.  In fact, 85% of lung cancer cases are attributed to smoking. Smokers who quit greatly reduce their risk of developing lung cancer and dying from the disease. After quitting, the risk for developing lung cancer decreases over time.

The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends annual lung cancer screening for asymptomatic patients, with no signs or symptoms of lung cancer.

Yearly lung cancer screening with low-dose CT (LDCT) is recommended for people who:

· Have a 20 pack year or more smoking history, and

· Smoke now or who have quit in the past 15 years, and

· Are 50-80 years of age.

Mountainside Medical Center is a designated Lung Cancer Screening Center by the American College of Radiology.  We offer access to low-dose CT lung scans, the most current and effective screening available.  Screening scans are reviewed by a Lung Cancer Team that includes pulmonologists, radiologists, and a thoracic surgical oncologist.  In the event of finding cancer, our team works collaboratively to ensure that every patient receives the best possible care, addressing each of our patient’s physical, emotional and practical needs, in order to achieve the very best outcome.

To discuss eligibility or schedule an appointment, please call (973) 429-6444.  To learn more about our Lung Program, please visit mountainsidehosp.com/lung.
