HackensackUMC Mountainside has been designated as a Breast Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology (ACR), the medical profession’s premier professional association in the fields of diagnostic and interventional radiology.

Center of Excellence status signifies that HackensackUMC Mountainside has exceeded the ACR’s mandatory mammography accreditation standards and voluntarily achieved more comprehensive, stringent standards. According to the ACR, “The breast imaging services at HackensackUMC Mountainside are fully accredited in mammography, stereotactic breast biopsy, breast ultrasound and ultrasound-guided biopsy. Peer review evaluations, conducted in each breast imaging modality by board-certified physicians and medical physicists who are experts in their field, have determined that HackensackUMC Mountainside has achieved high practice standards in image quality, personnel qualifications, facility equipment, quality control and quality assurance.”

“Excellence in breast imaging is essential because early intervention and accurate diagnosis make a dramatic difference in patient outcomes,” declared Dr. Jan Huston, director of the hospital’s Breast Center and a one of the region’s leading board-certified breast surgeons.

“The sophisticated imaging tools that we now have at our disposal can afford many women peace-of-mind by establishing that their conditions are benign. They can also detect asymptomatic breast cancer in its earliest stages. As a result, we’re able to use less invasive treatment options and the vast majority of early stage patients can resume all of their day-to-day activities and enjoy long life expectancies,” she said.

Dr. Huston holds the distinction of being the only breast care specialist on a national list of Top Surgeons compiled by Castle Connolly, a recognized leader in physician evaluation research. She is consistently cited among the best in her field and was included on New York Magazine’s list of Top Doctors for Women and the Inside Jersey list of Top Doctors in the state released this month. Huston is also the founder and director of Summit Breast Care.

State-of-the-Art Diagnostics

HackensackUMC Mountainside’s Breast Center team includes board-certified radiologists certified in the subspecialty of breast imaging and radiographers who have special mammography credentials. The Center offers digital mammography with computer-aided diagnosis, large-field mammography to more effectively screen women with large or dense breasts, genetic counseling for women who may be at risk due to family history and the most current minimally invasive, image-guided alternatives to surgical biopsies for those whose mammographies indicate a need for further evaluation.

Comprehensive Cancer Care

In the event of a breast cancer diagnosis, the HackensackUMC Mountainside Cancer Center is well-prepared to provide an exceptional standard of care. The Cancer Center is accredited with commendation by the American College of Surgeons’ Commission on Cancer, a designation awarded to only about one-fourth of all hospitals that provide cancer care nationwide, and staffed by a multidisciplinary team of specialists who collaboratively review each patient’s case to establish the best treatment plan. A Patient Navigator is assigned to work with every patient and their loved ones from diagnosis through the completion of treatment to minimize stress and ensure that all medical, emotional and practical needs are met.

Advanced Surgical Techniques

Dr. Jan Huston and other experienced, board-certified breast surgeons at HackensackUMC Mountainside are skilled at performing the most effective procedures for the treatment of benign and malignant breast conditions including lumpectomy with advanced oncoplastic procedures. Huston reports that at least 90% of women are candidates for lumpectomy. If mastectomy is necessary, our surgeons are skilled in nipple and skin-sparing mastectomies and immediate reconstructive plastic surgery following mastectomy.

“Our state ranks eighth in the nation for the incidence of breast cancer and Essex County rates are among the highest in the state,” said John Fromhold, FACHE, President and Chief Executive Officer of HackensackUMC Mountainside. “The achievement of Center of Excellence status by our Breast Imaging Program is consistent with the hospital’s goals of devoting resources to this community’s most pressing health care needs and providing convenient local access to an exceptional standard of care traditionally associated with larger medical centers.”
