Advanced Bariatrics

Craig Smith, age 58, is a business owner, husband, and father of three from Bloomfield, New Jersey — we caught up with him recently to see how he’s doing one year after his gastric sleeve procedure.

Procedure: Gastric Sleeve

Date of Surgery: July 22, 2014

Before: 347 lbs. After: 215 lbs.

Total Weight Loss: 132 lbs.

What was the process?

You have to have a number of tests to ensure you’re a candidate for the surgery. There was an endoscopy procedure to make sure there was nothing happening in my upper GI, a psych evaluation to make sure I was considering surgery for the right reasons, a stress test, a lung evaluation, and nutritional counseling. But I felt informed at the end of that. I really felt like I knew what I was doing.

How long did it take you to recover from surgery?

It was quick. I had no complications. I went in at 7:30 a.m., I was in recovery by 8:45. Home within two days. And within a week, I was riding my bike. For a few weeks I could only eat liquids and soft foods as my stomach healed after surgery
