Lung Cancer Screening
We offer the most current and effective screening, evaluation and treatment options for pulmonary nodules that can be caused by a variety of conditions including lung cancer.
An essential for smokers & ex-smokers
Smoking has been scientifically linked to lung cancer. You qualify for screening if you fit the following criteria:
Age 55 – 77
Currently smoke tobacco or have quit within the past 15 years
Asymptomatic, with no signs or symptoms of lung cancer
Smoked an average of one pack of cigarettes a day for 30 years
Simple screenings for those at-risk
Lung cancer is the most lethal of all forms of that disease and about 85 percent of all cases are linked to smoking. However, the use of low-dose CT (computed tomography) scans for early detection of lung nodules is good news for those at greatest risk, such as heavy smokers and former smokers. These lung scans are:
Quick, safe and painless– completed in just seconds with very little radiation exposure
More thorough than traditional x-rays - scientifically proven to be more effective in detecting cancer and other lung conditions
When carefully administered by HackensackUMC Mountainside’s skilled technicians and read by our distinguished, experienced, board-certified radiologists and pulmonologists, these scans are capable of providing:
Peace of mindfor many patients with benign lung scarring or inflammation
Early detectionthat results in less invasive treatment and dramatically improved outcomes for patients diagnosed with lung cancer
Advanced diagnostics using superDimension™ LungGPS™
When a nodule that requires further investigation is found on a scan, rather than a traditional biopsy, our specially trained pulmonologists will use the Covidien superDimension™ system, unique state-of-the-art technology that affords greater diagnostic clarity and reduces a patient’s risk of complications and discomfort.
Covidien superDimension™ - also known as LungGPS™ - allows physicians to more precisely locate nodules even when they are in deep, hard to reach areas of the lungs by performing a minimally invasive procedure called an Electromagnetic Navigation Bronchoscopy™ or ENB.
Convenient access to exceptional cancer care, if needed
In the event of a finding of cancer, the HackensackUMC Mountainside Cancer Center, a comprehensive program accredited with commendation by the Commission on Cancer, can provide a caliber of care that’s unsurpassed at any other hospital.
