State-of-the-art diagnostic resources
The Lung Center at HackensackUMC Mountainside offers a pulmonary nodule program. Its patients include those who are being monitored for a lung nodule or nodules previously detected on imaging tests and smokers who fall outside of eligibility for the Lung Cancer Screening program.
Lung nodules are small abnormalities and most are benign areas of inflammation or scarring. However, lung cancer in its earliest stages can also appear as a nodule – and, if a nodule grows in size, the possibility of cancer is increased. Our program is dedicated to determining whether such pulmonary nodules require further investigation for malignancy.
We provide low-dose “thin slice” CT lung scans, with results evaluated by specially trained thoracic radiologists who adhere to National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) standardized guidelines. If a suspicious pulmonary nodule that requires a biopsy is found, minimally invasive techniques including Endobronchial Ultrasound (EBUS) and Transthoracic Needle Biopsy are employed (TNB).
Advanced diagnostics using superDimension™ LungGPS™
Our specially trained pulmonologists have another high-tech tool in their arsenal in lieu of a traditional biopsy: the Covidien superDimension™ system, unique state-of -the-art technology that affords greater diagnostic clarity and reduces a patient’s risk of complications and discomfort. Covidien superDimension™ - also known as LungGPS™ - allows physicians to more precisely locate nodules even when they are in deep, hard to reach areas of the lungs by performing a minimally invasive procedure called an Electromagnetic Navigation Bronchoscopy™ or ENB.
