Routine dental visits and self-care make a difference
Poor oral hygiene can lead to a variety of dental and medical problems such as gum disease, infection, bone loss, heart disease, strokes and more. Regular cleanings and check-ups can prevent those problems, as well as provide you and your family with support for good oral self-care. Most children and adults should see their dentist for a regular check-up and cleaning every six months.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there are about 500 million dental visits each year in the United States at a cost of about $50 billion. However, there are still many adults and children who suffer from oral diseases that could be prevented. Here is another startling fact: an estimated 30,000 Americans are diagnosed with oral and pharyngeal cancers each year, resulting in more than 8,000 deaths. Many of those deaths could be prevented with regular dental exams. Also, nearly 20 percent of preschoolers suffer needlessly from tooth decay. Proper preventive care - regular check-ups, brushing, flossing, fluoridation and dental sealants - can significantly reduce those risks and the suffering they cause.
