HackensackUMC Mountainside and Montclair Police Department Partner to Combat Drug Abuse

HackensackUMC Mountainside, in partnership with the Montclair Police Department, will be hosting a safe “Medication Drop Off” site on Wednesday, March 15th from 9am – Noon and again from 2pm – 5pm in the Main Lobby at HackensackUMC Mountainside, 1 Bay Avenue in Montclair.  This approved site will accept all medications including opioids and other pain prescriptions.

According to New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, the opioid epidemic has become a public health crisis in the State. As set forth in Executive Order 219 signed by Governor Christie, “nationally, it is estimated that an American dies every 19 minutes from an overdose of heroin or prescription opioids.”

This awareness campaign is part of HackensackUMC Mountainside’s commitment to patient safety and National Patient Safety Awareness Week, an initiative of the National Patient Safety Foundation beginning the week of Monday, March 13th.  “We are hoping to raise awareness about opioid abuse and the recent increase of opioid related overdose in New Jersey” says Karen Palatella, Chief Quality and Compliance Officer.

HackensackUMC Mountainside and the Montclair Police will provide information related to centers for drug treatment, signs and symptoms of opioid abuse and alternative pain relief options such as reiki or acupuncture.  Representatives from the Montclair Police and the HackensackUMC Mountainside Safety Committee will be available during this event to answer questions.
