HackensackUMC Mountainside has been awarded an “A” grade for hospital safety from The Leapfrog Group, a not-for-profit organization run by employers and other large purchasers of health benefits, which announced the results of its nationwide hospital review on October 18.

“Along with numerous other independent review scores that have certified the quality and safety of our care, this exemplary Leapfrog rating illustrates that we’re realizing our goal of providing convenient local access to world-class healthcare,” said John Fromhold, Chief Executive Officer of the hospital.  “Once again our dedicated, talented physicians and staff have distinguished themselves as among the best in their respective fields and I congratulate them on a job well done.”

Leapfrog’s Hospital Safety Score program assigns A, B, C, D or F scores to facilities throughout the U.S. based upon preventable medical errors, injuries, accidents and infections. According to Leapfrog, “Hospital Safety Scores are compiled under the guidance of the nation’s leading experts on patient safety and are designed to give the public information they can use to protect themselves and their families.”

HackensackUMC Mountainside was also cited last month in Consumer Reports’ Surgery Ratings as one of just four New Jersey hospitals which ranked better than average in its inaugural safety review of more than 2,400 hospitals nationwide.

At HackensackUMC Mountainside, patients have immediate access to innovative and effective treatment alternatives at specialized centers within the hospital that focus on imaging, women’s health, cancer care, surgery, obesity, stroke and chronic kidney disease. The 365-bed community hospital also serves as a learning center via its nursing school and residency programs. HackensackUMC Mountainside is designated as a Primary Stroke Center by the NJ State Department of Health and Senior Services and is one of only a few community hospitals licensed by the State to perform emergency angioplasty.
