HackensackUMC Mountainside Celebrates National Nurses Week

HackensackUMC Mountainside presented sixteen nurses with awards at the Annual Nurse Excellence Award celebration held in conjunction with National Nurses Week on Thursday, May 5th.

Myrtle Phillips Forsyth, RN, Annual Nursing Awards were presented to Jennifer Coppola, RN and Katrina Natividad, RN for inpatient clinical care achievements. Six additional nurses received Laraja Foundation Professional Practice Awards for exemplifying the mission, vision and values of HackensackUMC Mountainside and serving as a role model for others. Natalie Calderon, RN,Kim Daonguyen, RN, Jose Garcia, RN, Anjanette Hutchinson, RN, Omara “Judith” Rogalsky, RN and Thelia Russell, RN were each recognized for nursing excellence in various service areas.

The Martin L. Sorger, MD, Orthopedic Nursing Award was presented to Janet Treffinger, RNfor excellence in the acute care Orthopedic Unit at HackensackUMC Mountainside. Dr. Sorger was an orthopedic surgeon on staff at HackensackUMC Mountainside for more than 40 years. 

Seven new categories of nursing excellence, from nursing education to patient and staff management were added to the celebration this year.  One special category added recognizes Patient Service Advocates (PSAs) who work collaboratively with RN’s on a daily basis to provide quality, compassionate patient care.  A Distinguished Team Award was presented.  The Distinguished Team Award is presented to a team, committee or unit who consistently demonstrates exceptional teamwork and recognizes the value of interdisciplinary practice.


Excellence in Advancing and Leading the Profession, Gina D’Alessio, RN; Excellence in Inpatient Clinical Care, Alyssa Marchese, RN; Excellence in Ambulatory Care, Maria Correia, RN; Excellence in Patient and Staff Management, Linda Monaghan, RN; Excellence in Education and Mentorship, Michelle Buda, RN; Excellence in Long Term Care, Rebecca Gerlach, RN; Rising Star, Amanda Belcastro, RN; Excellence in Patient Care – Patient Service Associate, Dawn Grovesnor-Patterson, Brenda Hargrove and Franchette Jones.  Distinguished Team Award; Operating Room and Joint Commission Disease Specific Team for Hip, Knee and Sepsis.
