HackensackUMC Mountainside will anchor second annual joint drive to help refugees living locally

May 4, 2015 04:00 PM

HackensackUMC Mountainside is partnering with The International Rescue Committee in New Jersey (IRC), Community FoodBank of New Jersey and Kathleen’s Closet Thrift Store, the Montclair Art Museum, Partners for Health, the Montclair Public Library, the NJ Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) and local philanthropist and IRC trustee Josh Weston on Saturday, May 30 to conduct a collection drive. This event, to be held in the hospital’s Radiation Oncology Parking Lot from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., will benefit hundreds of refugees being resettled by the IRC in New Jersey.

The IRC responds to devastating humanitarian crises globally offering life-saving care and assistance to those fleeing disaster and war by helping them survive and rebuild their lives. The greater New York City area, including northern New Jersey, is one of the leading areas of residence for legal permanently resettled refugees and the items collected will be distributed through the IRC’s regional resettlement office in Elizabeth, NJ.  In fact, seven truckloads of donations received during this one-day, joint initiative last year were directed to area refugees by the IRC.
Clothing and household goods needed
This event presents a unique opportunity to support survivors of international crises while also contributing to the betterment of this region simply by emptying your closets and cupboards of useful but excess or unwanted items. On May 30, Community FoodBank of New Jersey and Kathleen’s Closet Thrift Store trucks stationed in the HackensackUMC Mountainside Radiation Oncology parking lot, adjacent to the hospital’s main entrance at One Bay Avenue, will accept donations of the following:
Clothing and shoes – new or gently-used, clean items for men, women and children
Cell phones -  with AC adapters, chargers and other accessories
Flatware and kitchen utensils - forks, knives, spoons, serving spoons, etc.
Dishware - plates, bowls  and cups
Cookware - pots and pans, mixing and serving bowls
Small appliances - microwaves, toasters, blenders, coffee makers and vacuums
General household items - lamps, alarm clocks, folding chairs and tables, etc.
Educational, entertainment and fitness items - books, DVDs, video cassettes, exercise equipment, etc.
To expedite issuance of receipts for charitable tax deductions, contributors are asked to bring a list of items they are donating.  In case of rain, the collection drive will be rescheduled for Sunday, May 31, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the same location. In case of inclement weather, call (908) 351-5116 X116 for a message about collection’s finalized date.
HackensackUMC Mountainside is actively engaged in community-oriented activities that deliver quality care and services to Montclair and neighboring communities.
