Health & Wellness Day Will Focus on the Entire Family: Mountainside event will feature restaurant competition, stress busters and kid friendly activities

Mountainside Hospital’s upcoming Health & Wellness Day will make health and safety topics fun for all ages. In fact, nearly two dozen local businesses, civic organizations, colleges and municipal agencies will participate in the event on Saturday, September 25 from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. on the hospital grounds at Bay and Highland Avenues, Montclair. Admission is free and advance registration is required online at mountainsidenow.com or by calling 1-888-973-4MSH. Ample free parking will be available. All registrants will receive gift bags and several raffle prizes will be awarded.
 
The day’s activities will include art and music therapy programs, chair massages and a healthy recipe contest. Local chefs will participate in a competition judged by Ariane Duarte, recent competitor on the national TV show, “Top Chef” and the proprietor of CulinARIANE along with Emily Johnston, registered dietician at Mountainside.
 
Activities for children will include a bike rodeo and helmet safety presented by Bike/Walk of Montclair, “Kids in the Kitchen” program presented by the Junior League of Montclair/Newark, exercise programs and a Teddy Bear Clinic.
 
Numerous free health screenings will be available and the Montclair Health Department will offer flu vaccines ($20 fee or free with proof of Medicare Part B).
 
“September 25 has been officially designated as Family Health & Fitness Day USA.  As a community health care provider, we are delighted to take a leadership role in bringing together many organizations to ensure that this national event is recognized locally with meaningful activities that promote healthier, safer lifestyles,” said John A. Fromhold, President and Chief Executive Officer of Mountainside Hospital. The event date is also National Car Seat Check Saturday and September is National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month. Activities that address both issues are planned.  
 
Organizations and businesses scheduled to present activities or donate goods and services include; Montclair State College (music therapy); Home Corp. (home safety/affordable housing information); Junior League of Montclair/Newark (Kids in the Kitchen); Montclair Health & Wellness Initiative (children’s activities); Montclair Schools Key Club (event volunteers); Montclair YMCA (exercise activities for children); Northern NJ Maternal Child Health Consortium ; Montclair Health Department. (flu vaccines); Montclair Recreation Department ; Bloomfield Health Department (Wheel of Health program); Starlight Dance Center (Hip Hop for Kids, adult fitness); Mountainside Health Foundation (Community gardening); SafeKids Northern NJ (car seat safety check) Aramark (food and beverages); and Brookdale Shop-Rite (food and beverages).
 
In addition to organizing and hosting the event, Mountainside Hospital will sponsor following activities: an exercise obstacle course; a Teddy Bear Clinic; tooth brushing and flossing lessons; blood pressure, glucose/diabetes, body fat/BMI and hearing screenings; and the healthy recipe contest.
