Hospital Forms Mountainside Medical Group to Address Primary Care Shortage

HackensackUMC Mountainside has created the Mountainside Medical Group, a network of physicians employed by the hospital and based at convenient locations throughout its service area, to help ensure access to essential primary care services. Highly regarded local doctors with established practices and experienced, board-certified physicians who are new to suburban Essex and neighboring Passaic County towns are among Mountainside Medical Group’s inaugural members. Seven doctors are currently treating patients at three MMG locations, with more physicians and offices to be added in the coming months. “Although it has been proven that primary care physician relationships promote wellness and improve quality of life, there’s also a documented shortage of such practitioners locally and nationally,” said John Fromhold, FACHE, Chief Executive Officer of HackensackUMC Mountainside. “The Mountainside Medical Group will help to alleviate that concern in our region and afford area residents the opportunity to build productive, long-term relationships with doctors who have exceptional clinical skills and a genuine interest in getting to know them.” “While it may seem counter-intuitive for us to make a strategic investment in well care that ideally will reduce hospital admissions, this exciting development is consistent with Mountainside’s long and distinguished history of adapting to changing times,” he said. “The healthcare landscape has changed dramatically since our hospital was founded in 1891, yet we’ve successfully served multiple generations and become a hub for comprehensive care by keeping abreast of emerging local needs and medical advances. We’re pleased to offer a coordinated network of outpatient and inpatient services designed to enhance the caliber of care, minimize inconvenience and reduce costs for our constituents.” Mountainside Medical Group physicians include Dr. Julie Kidangan, a board-certified Family Medicine physician and Dr. Raghav Rastogi, a board-certified Internist who are located in the Harries Pavilion at HackensackUMC Mountainside. Dr. Kidangan, a Montclair resident, worked previously at an Urgent Care Center. Dr. Rastogi practiced in Westchester County, NY. In the Caldwell area, two board-certified Internists, Drs. Katharine Palla and Monique Hamilton, are based at 101 Roseland Avenue. Dr. Palla’s office was formerly located in Montville and Dr. Hamilton practiced in New York City before joining Mountainside Medical Group. The group also includes three Endocrinologists: Dr. Stephen Sherry and Dr. Maris Davis, whose practice at 119 Grove Street, in Montclair was formerly known as Montclair Endocrine Associates. Both are board-certified Internists and Endocrinologists with extensive clinical experience treating diabetes, thyroid, and metabolic conditions. A third Internist and Endocrinologist, Dr. Uzma Shafqat is located on-campus at the HackensackUMC Mountainside Harries Pavilion, One Bay Avenue, Montclair, Suite #5. “All of these physicians have impressive credentials, sound clinical experience and an unwavering commitment to Mountainside Medical Group’s mission of treating people rather than symptoms, listening rather than lecturing and personalizing care rather than generalizing,” said HackensackUMC Mountainside CEO John Fromhold. “All are well qualified to provide routine care, assist with the management of chronic conditions to reduce the risk of escalation or complications and provide referrals for specialty care when needed.” Mountainside Medical Group members have convenient office hours and accept all major insurance plans.
