Montclair, NJ -- John A. Fromhold has been appointed Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of HackensackUMC Mountainside by Montclair Health System, LLC the joint venture that acquired the hospital in July 2012. Montclair Health System LLC is a joint venture between Hackensack University Health Network (HUHN) and the LHP Hospital Group, Inc. (LHP). Mr. Fromhold is the incumbent Chief Executive Officer and has been associated with the hospital since 2007.

“At this time of unprecedented change for hospitals and the entire healthcare system, networks are becoming increasingly essential and the most vibrant, successful entities will be those that have strong, effective leadership at the helm of every affiliate,” observed Robert C. Garrett, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Hackensack University Health Network. “John Fromhold has amassed an impressive array of achievements at HackensackUMC Mountainside by consistently exercising sound judgment, personal integrity and exceptional relationship building capabilities. I’m looking forward to working with him to grow HackensackUMC Mountainside and ensure that it keeps abreast of the healthcare needs of residents of suburban Essex and neighboring Passaic County towns.”

“John Fromhold has played a pivotal, transformational role in the history of HackensackUMC Mountainside and we’re delighted that he will continue to serve as its leader,” said Richard Freeman, New Jersey Market President of the LHP Hospital Group. “In the midst of a very difficult economic climate and a challenging operating environment, John successfully garnered the support of all of the hospital’s stakeholders and, under his direction, they’ve worked collaboratively to significantly enhance the quality and safety of patient care and expand the scope of health care services offered while also remarkably improving the hospital’s operating performance and securing its future.”

Fromhold is a fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives with 30 years of hospital administration experience. In 2007, as Chief Operating Officer for Merit Health Systems, LLC of Louisville, KY, he was instrumental in identifying Mountainside for acquisition by that organization and he relocated to New Jersey to assume the CEO position.

In just a few years, the hospital emerged from an uncertain future to become the most fiscally stable in the state. It also distinguished itself among facilities of comparable size through the addition of services that address timely health concerns and state-of-the art upgrades including a da Vinci robotic surgery program, hyperbaric oxygen chambers for wound care, an inpatient Geriatric Psychiatry program, expanded Women’s Health services and an electronic records management system.

After experiencing a dramatic revitalization under the stewardship of Merit Health Systems, the 121-year-old community hospital was acquired by the HUHN/LHP joint venture earlier this year. HUHN and LHP are also partners in the renovation of the former Pascack Valley Hospital in Westwood (Bergen County) that is scheduled to reopen as HackensackUMC at Pascack Valley in the spring of 2013.
“There’s a very special, distinctive spirit of community and cooperation at Mountainside and my association with this hospital has been a highlight of my professional career. I’m proud of all that we’ve been able to accomplish,” said John Fromhold in accepting the appointment. “I’m honored to receive this vote of confidence from LHP, one of the country’s premier private hospital management companies, and the Hackensack University Health Network which is a nationally recognized clinical standard bearer. As a result of their commitment to HackensackUMC Mountainside, I believe this hospital is well-positioned to continue to elevate the caliber of its patient care while also meeting the administrative and cost containment challenges that lie ahead for all health care providers.”

Along with HackensackUMC Mountainside and Merit Health Systems, Fromhold’s hospital administration background includes senior management positions with Humana and HCA. He also served as a Group Vice President for Community Health Systems with direct responsibility for 13 hospitals in five states.

“John Fromhold is a proven leader who has earned the support and admiration of our medical staff and employees by fostering a culture of productive collaboration, mutual respect and teamwork. That extraordinary working environment, coupled with prudent, strategic capital investments, has resulted in enhancements to many medical departments and support services,” observed Dr. Konstantin Walmsley, Medical Staff President at HackensackUMC Mountainside. “Under John’s leadership, HackensackUMC Mountainside’s physicians and employees are never satisfied with the status quo and we are constantly striving for excellence.”
